000) AUCKLAND AIRPORT
12/10 Arrival with the All Blacks.
12/10 Two days of shopping (tent, cap, stuff) and dejetlagging
14/10 Arrival per bus, moving straight on
003) TE PUKE
14/10 Nothing special, got a hitchhike here. Hiking on the beach, I got sand in the eye.
14/10 Campin on the shore. Saw a seal (that nearly attacked me). In the night a wild pig roamed the tent. Learned how precious food can be.
15/10 Arrived through hitchhike from Jake, staying in his flat for a few days. In the evening bathing naked in hot springs udnerneath the stars. In return, Luana and Nina cooked food and I did weeding. Killed a ~5cm spider with a broomstick (accidentally).
16/10 Luana got her new haircut.
006) ROTORUA CITY
18/10 Went to city, were not getting a hike. Roaming unsurely on the beach, trying to find a place to camp. Ended up in a hostel where I overestimated the covers and froze to death.
19/10 The "Anywhere"-sign was born (I got the idea! Ha!) Still no ride. We took the bus.
19/10 Got picked up by a couchsurfer on a cafe. Staying with him for some days, visiting the river they call "Falls" and other nice spots.
22/10 Got a hitchhike to Napier, finding a couchsurfer in Hastings, next to it.
22/10 Hastings is full of uniformed schoolgirls. Napier is full of sunshine and palms.
24/10 Sleeping in front of a jewellery store, meeting Kane. Got intruduced to busking.
25/10 Bought jewellery wirth 370$ for 7$. Resold them for 30$. Bought a guitar. Sleeping on the beach. Found a new talisman.
28/10 Getting into toad's hall (hostel) because of Luana's backpain. Learning songs.
05/11 Starting busking. Doing good.
10/11 Left town because were bored. Nina stayed behind, going for her boyfriend in Auckland.
10/11 Little cafe and lunch. Cozy town, but too small for busking.
10/11 Arrival. Got a hike pretty straight away to Wellington, sleeping on the couch of the guy who gave us the hike. Another guy gets in bed (with a girl) while my sleeping bag's still in there. Freezing myself to death again.
11/11 Working for the local Hare Krishna centre for free dinner because they celebrated their "Sugar Hill Festival" after busking without earning anything worth mentioning. Much fuss around nothing (you can choose to what that applies). In the evening just talking to a guy on the street if he got an idea where we can stay. We stayed in his flat.
12/11 Meeting Jake's Mum, going at her place. I got sick. Seriously.
12/11 Arrival at Jake's place.
13/11 Fever nightmares. I was a talking loaf of bread (arguing with another one to whom the slice belongs that we found on the beach) and watched an army of cartoon tigers dancing irish dance and Kasachok.
14/11 Getting better.
16/11 Meeting Cyn on a birthday party. Spent the evening talking to her ending up sleeping in her flat.
17/11 Rented ourselves in said flat, followed by endless tries to earn enough money busking. Also tried to find another job. No sucess.
01/12 Got myself a keyboard from local cash converter. Bad idea. Still no money to make. Luana had a good feeling about it, I had to pay the 220$.
08/12 Started working at a Subway store. Memories of that time: Sandwiches, blisters on fingers, people who knew everything better.
11/12 Got knocked out by paralyzing back pain. Cramps in the night.
13/12 Luana left with George. I stayed behind, curing (and cursing) my back pain, reading books, making records for Black Inck.
20/12 Crossing over to South Island. Talking for hours to Anna, promised to visit her in Christchurch. Felt free. Another chapter begun.
20/12 Arriving. Goodbying Anna, hitchhiking straight away. Didn't get far.
016) SPRINGS CREEK
20/12 Stuck for hours. Got to know another hitchhiker, Jason. Finally got a ride.
20/12 Meeting Sarah, owner of the local gallery. Got an offer to camp on her lawn, but got a ride later on.
20/12 Nice town, reminded me of Napier. Camped in the woods after remeeting Jason.
21/12 Back injury broke up again (backpack carrying...) Barely able to move. Tried busking. Got good money and rented myself into a hostel. Full of german people, all of them nice, most of them shallow.
24/12 Didn't really feel like Christmas, taken aside I earn over 200$.
25/12 Much walking and being bitten by sandflies. Got a lovely Christmas tree guitar string sculpture present.
26/12 Two ripped strings. I got destiny's hint and moved on.
26/12 Short stay. Kentucky Fried Chicken store next to me. Got a ride from two french travellers.
26/12 Stuck. Small town that looks big on the map (just one street with shops and farms around that structure). No cheap backpacker, but sausages for 50c. Finally found a tent site for 10$ per night, resembled more a trailer park. Fun evening with the guys.
27/12 Following Brendon's advice, tried to busk in town. Found no good place. LONG walk to good hitchhiking point. Got a ride pretty fast.
27/12 Was dropped off, waiting 3 minutes. Canadian girl wanted to visit Arthur's Pass. Might visit Rob (who worked there).
27/12 She dropped me off. No meeting Rob. I campedd by the riverside. Much sand and another wild pig at night. Rained all night.
28/12 Packing sandy and wet tent. Got soaked myself. While washing on a public toilet, I talked to a guy and got myself a ride.
023) SPRINGS JUNCTION
28/12 Ride ended here. Small town, no chance to get food. Lady at fuel station just barked at me. Everything full of sandflies, so I fought them instead of hitchhiking. A couple stopped in spite of that.
28/12 Another 3 minute wait. Got picked up by a hunter on his way back to Westport.
28/12 The hunting guy, Rob, gave me coffee, internet and lunch. Got into a tent site and busked outside the supermarket. Good money. Wrote this list.
31/12 Didn't feel like Sylvester. Bad music and about half a dozen fireworks.
01/01 Everyone had a hangover (although noone partied?) Not too much money.
02/01 Black day. Made no money, got tuna oil poured into guitar case, tent pole snapped. Left town after waiting three hours for a hike.
02/01 Got off here. Looked very deserted. Met a german traveller who got cookies instead of a hitchhiking sign to lure the cars off the street. Got a hike pretty quickly.
02/01 Got into hostel where I got help in improvising a tent pole repair. Tent looked like a wet dream of M.C.Escher. No supermarket around allows busking.
03/01 Got a better pole repair from local blacksmith. Took off to Rapahoe.
03/01 Stayed with the Ra's. Pretty cool hippie family. Did some pretty wicked jamming stuff on keyboards, but no records, as the sound card was broken.
05/01 Got taken into Greymouth by the Ra's for further travel.
05/01 Just got breakfast (Pie!) and a ride.
030) WAKAIRI JUNCTION
05/01 Tripped over railroads and fell (with backpack on) into glass shards. An old lady helped me clean the wounds. Got a ride then.
05/01 Got a hostel, finally a BBH card and some good money busking.
06/01 Free glowworm watching in a near cave. Impressing, but not dazzling.
09/01 Hokitika bored me. I left.
032) FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
09/01 I got dropped off. Tourists everywhere. Got another ride soon.
09/01 Little stop for expensive lunch (Pie!)
09/01 Beautiful scenery. But got no accomodation and a bad gut feeling. Moving on.
09/01 Lovely old goldminer town. No good busking place. I camped on the river. Sandfly feeding frenzy. Sleeping on some rocks.
10/01 Woke up stone sore (heh, heh... get it?) Moving on.
036) FRANKTON INDUSTRIAL AREA
10/01 Said to be a very good busking place. First accidentally walked into industrial area, then got a ride into the right place.
037) FRANKTON CITY
10/01 Very amazing view over the azur blue lake. But the supermarket is 2 km away from the campground and won't allow busking... Moving on.
10/01 Didn't like the place. Touristic egocentricity and decadence seeping out of every corner. Got a hostel with amazing view over the lake. Then tried busking. 1,90$ for 45 minutes (70c if you don't count the guy I already knew). Frustration.
11/01 Got up at 5:30 and snuggled to a cliff with my sleeping bag watching the sunrise (and slept for two more hours). Later, I got moving on... again. Took eons to get a ride.
11/01 Dropped off again. Sandy parking ground, waiting eternities.
040) ? ? ?
11/01 Got dropped off at the crossroad. 19 km to next town, 34C and about 20 kg luggage. Nearly no cars. Got walking, but fortunately got a ride eventually.
041) TE ANAU
11/01 Wonderful lake, nice people, cheap hostel, excellent busking sports. But for some reason nearly no busking money. I decided to grab on my savings and take some days off.
12/01 First FREE day in a LONG time.
13/01 I decided to move on.
13/01 Got dropped off a little outside of town. No cars around for a long time, I hiked for about an hour until someone had pity.
13/01 Lunch break. I decide to hit the road again. Get a ride pretty soon, although I have to walk onto the other side of town (a few kms!)
044) COLAC BAY SURF PARK
13/01 The guy (Real estate agent!) who picked me up surfs for awhile. I enjoyed the beach and chilled. Had canned lunch and cut my finger on the can. Then he took me back to town.
045) COLAC BAY
13/01 First backpacker hostel with free internet since Napier, first free internet since Wellington. Typing this list down, fixing the broken blog design, idling on ICQ.
16/01 Got sick because of the strong Colac Bay wind. Slept the whole day.
17/01 Still no good money busking. Got chased off the property by Camp Ground Dragon. Decide to get back home.
17/01 Just a small stop. Listen to Linkin Park and Kettcar. Then get picked up by Sue.
17/01 Am able to sleep in a little hut in Sue's garden. Three very cute dogs, three cats, less cute. One swedish au-pair-girl, very cute again.
18/01 Slept good, but allergics against the cats were killing me. Moving on (I should get a copyright on that phrase).
18/01 Just a small stop watching over a dam and Steph having a smoke.
18/01 Got just dropped off at the edge of the town, an art gallery next to me where I used the toilets. So much for Alexandra.
18/01 Again just a small stop, having lunch (ice cream. Delicious one.) Got picked up by the "Black Sheep".
18/01 Middle of nowhere, just a small stop to watch the beach. I really enjoyed it, missed the ocean.
18/01 Walking along the beach, talking much and visiting the Moeraki Boulders.
18/01 Wonderful adventurous stroll along the beach, meeting a very big seal and collecting dazzling mussles.
18/01 A town again. I really like the vibes, but no place allows busking and it's pretty empty at this time of year, so I guessed it's time to move on again.
19/01 And that's exactly what I did.
19/01 Nothing special. Directly moving on (if you can call it directly when you have to walk for ages before getting a hike).
19/01 We got dropped off. Nice trees. I walk towards town.
19/01 Busking festival in town, so I didn't even bother trying getting some money. Desperately texting with Anna, checking mail etc, etc, just to end up in front of a full theatre - no more entry. I did some shopping and already got comfortable with the idea of sleeping underneath the trees, then I saw her on the street.
19/01 After a small stop by some friends of her, we get to her house (very hidden beneath the garden and with a lot of hidden tracks out of it) and, well, I go to sleep pretty directly.
20/01 Anna helps me figure out some mistakes on the BlackInck-Translation and I move on much later than I hoped I would.
20/01 Just a looong walk through a cozy living quarter. Whatever. Then a loooong wait.
061) ARTHUR'S PASS
20/01 Was very happy to see Robert again. I was allowed to crash at his place, so I saved some more money (and didn't risk the omnipresent Keas to attack my tent).
21/01 Moving on - more Keas and another looooong walk.
21/01 Back again - same town, same hostel, same songs. Making some money again. FINALLY.
24/01 The Ocean Incident.
25/01 I played in a bar in town. An about 50-year-old guy tries to pick me up, but I got home unharassed and was able to re-earn all the money I spent so far. YAY! Nightly celebration with ginger beer and Steak&Cheese pies.
27/01 Time to move on again... Get a pretty good ride directly from the hostel.
27/01 Home of the "world-famous" Pancake Rocks. Had to intention visiting them, so I just moved on. No need to mention I had to walk for ages.
27/01 Play it again, Sam. Same hostel, same songs, but less money than I expected to get. Whatever.
30/01 I rebooked my flight. Yay!
01/02 Time to move on again - I make nearly no money at all... What's wrong with this?
01/02 Just a crossroad where I get dropped off. Few cars, In Extremo in my mp3-player and burning sun.
01/02 Was lucky to get a ride directly over here. Targets in the area: Taikerikeri Beach and Pupu Springs. Planning to stay in town for the night.
067) PUPU SPRINGS
01/02 That's life. I got a nice show-around and was able to steal some of the water. :3 Cicadas everywhere. The noise was unbearable.
01/02 Waving the boys goodbye and moving on back to Motueka. Got a ride pretty directly.
01/02 Just a little crossroad 4 kms away from Kaiteriteri Beach. Got a ride after about 20 seconds.
070) KAITERITERI BEACH
01/02 Finally got a tent site, although it was from the CCNZ ("Christian Camping New Zealand". Whatever. Tasty noodles, some interesting discussions and some more reasons to dislike religion.
02/02 Was collecting sand on the beach, some more discussions and watched some fishing. Then moving on (again and again and again...)
02/02 Don't worry, just passing through.
02/02 Back again... but different hostel atop a hill. Whatever. Tried to busk, but there was a guy playing the flute looking like Gandalf. I booked in for the next days.
03/02 ANTS EVERYWHERE. I moved on my tent to another backpackers and busked awhile. Made not too much money though... Katha arrived. In the evening chocolate-bread-pudding. Or something.
04/02 Made about 3 Dollar an hour and some pieces of trash. I snapped and left town head-over-heels. Longest need to get a hichhike so far... Damnit.
073) WAKAPUAKA SAND FIELDS
04/02 I finally got a ride. thank got.
04/02 Or not.
075) SPRING CREEK
04/02 Finally standing in the rain, totally soaked and desperate. Fortunately I got something pretty soon. But learned that the hostel I was aiming for wouldn't need staff...
04/02 Windy, stormy weather and a discount on the ferry. Meeting people I knew. Everything dark and a little gloomy. Great dinner with rolls and tuna.
05/02 Arrived at about 2:30 in the morning. Luckily got a place to crash.
06/02 Got to town, tracing down Tu's new flat and eventually able to get to crash on Calum's couch for a few days.
08/02 Setting the keyboard on Trademe.
09/02 Moving over to Matt's again.
16/02 Keyboard didn't sell on Trademe.
17/02 I got kind of thrown out by Matt's roommate. Got one more day.
18/02 I sold the keyboard for a crap price on Cash Converters again.
19/02 Moving on again...
19/02 Small town, reminded me of Greymouth. I crossed over to the Highway and hitchhiked on. I got a ride pretty quick, then learned that hitchhiking from the Highway is highly illegal.
19/02 Nice little spot to hitchhike. Had a little stream. And ducks.
19/02 Dusty Sideway beneath a little road. Strange metal ring lying around.
19/02 Just a little outside the turnoff to Palmerston North. Listened to music, got a ride pretty quickly.
19/02 Little stop for a pie and some coffee. There was a manga-based cake shop in town called "Mummy Yummy's Cheesecake!!!" It was closed. Unfortunately.
19/02 Dropped off again at a little turnoff at the egde of town. Got picked up by a truckdriver.
085) JUST BEFORE NAPIER
19/02 What's to say? Just before Napier. Didn't get into town directly. Duh.
19/02 Got picked up by a nice girl and, well, into town. All cheap hostels are booked out. I remet Kane, still free and still the same dick, then got into some kind of "emergency hostel" (just one night per tent allowed). I haggled them up to two nights.
20/02 Finally tried some busking again. Three dollar per hour. Kane was on the "I own the street"-trip. I freaked out and rebooked my flight again.
21/02 Moving on pretty soon in the morning, being picked up directly while still in town.
087) ESK VALLEY
21/02 That's where the guy lived. Listened to music while waiting for a ride, fortunately I got nice shadow from a tree.
21/02 Back again. First checking Couchsurfing for possible hosts, then dozing a few hours underneath a tree near the sea. Got no couchsurfer, so been moving on later. After a little lunch (Spaghetti&Cheese from Pam's).
21/02 Arriving relatively late, getting around to Jessica's. Full house.
22/02 Visiting some hot springs and mud fountains, later night walk to the supermarket. Needed some time out...
23/02 Leaving relatively early, desperately trying to get a ride out of town. Until I got one into the opposite direction...
090) ROTORUA AIRPORT STREET
23/02 ...where it was more likely to get a ride.
23/02 Getting off on a pretty deserted road. Waited eternities to get a ride, until someone coming right out of the entry to the Motel got me on board.
23/02 Arrived in the main road, asked my way to a internet cafe and contacted Ross. Figured out where he lived and walked on.
093) TAURANGA - SOMEWHERE ELSE
23/02 Did NOT figure out though that it was about 8 kilometers away from town centre. After about 90 minutes walking I arrived. Hyperactive dog, cuddly cat and sausage rolls.
094) TAURANGA HIGHWAY
25/02 Hitchhiking next to a school. Figured out it might have been NOT the brightest idea to go hitchhiking on a monday morning. Everyone was slightly... grumpy. Finally got a ride though.
25/02 Just a little spot outside of town. Hitchhiking with a donated "Hamilton"-sign, got a ride after about 3 minutes. Hm.
25/02 Finally arrived in Hamilton with the Brooms after killing some time in town at the library and a weird, korean internet cafe. Cute baby, short nights.
27/02 Small day trip out to the beach. Chocolate powder and powdery sand.
28/02 Sleep lack was really kicking in. I came with Sarah who was driving to a funeral in Auckland. Saw a town called "Ramarama". Had to think of the Hare Krishna guys.
28/02 Arriving pretty late at Tiff's flat.
100) AUCKLAND AIRPORT
